Accelerated Reader – Program Overview

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program will begin at State Bridge on September 15. AR is a computerized reading comprehension program that combines technology and research to motivate and increase independent reading. The 7 month program, sponsored by the PTA, is offered to second through fifth grade students. First grade students can participate if their teacher feels they are ready. AR is an optional enrichment program, but all students are encouraged to participate in order to build reading and comprehension skills. To make the program more fun and engaging for the students, prizes are awarded based on point levels achieved. Please see the page regarding point levels and prizes for information. The rules and procedures for the program are as follows:

  1. A student reads a book from the Accelerated Reader book list. This list can be found on the State Bridge PTA website, www.sbcepta.com. A copy of the list is also located at the Northeast/Spruill Oaks library, and the Ocee library in a binder in the Children’s Reference section. AR books in the SBCE Media Center are designated by an orange sticker with the reading level on the spine.
  2. Students have been tested using the Star Reader assessment at school. This test determines your child’s independent reading level. Parents will be informed of their student’s reading level so they can help in choosing books.
  3. After reading a book a student can take a computerized test, answering simple multiple-choice questions that check recall of basic facts and events in the book. Students may test in the Media Center or in their classroom during the school day at the discretion of the teacher. The Media Center will also be open before school for test taking on Fridays at 7:20.
  4. After completing the test, the student receives a point score based on the difficulty level of the book, and the number of questions he/she answers correctly. The computer keeps track of each student’s points, reading level and test percentages. This is valuable information for teachers, as well as the basis for various rewards at school. Once a month an information sheet will be sent home for each student so you may see how many tests your child has attempted, and how they have scored.

Please encourage your children to take part in this fun and rewarding program and have fun reading!
